Turnovers and the illusion of a fast game
A game can look chaotic and fast while frequent turnovers reduce field-goal attempts. A different kind of turnover, a steal leading to easy points, can speed up scoring instead. TOV% alone cannot establish the direction of a total.
Live-ball and dead-ball turnovers
Live statistics do not always distinguish turnovers leading to a fast break from the ball going out of bounds. The model therefore cross-checks fast-break points, possession length and the ratio of field-goal attempts to possessions.
Historical reactions
Teams address turnovers differently after a time-out or half-time. A high-TOV% Q1 scenario only has meaning when the team's typical Q2 response and its stability against similar pressure are known.
What the model checks
- The type of turnover
- Fast-break points
- Field-goal attempts per possession
- The response after a break
