Team totals: offence and what the opponent allows

Saying that a team 'always scores 55' describes only one side. A team total needs two separate perspectives: how the team generates points and how many its opponent allows to teams of that type.

Two separate evidence sources

The offensive profile includes the team's pace, eFG%, free-throw rate, offensive rebounds and turnovers. The points-allowed profile describes the opposing defence. They cannot simply be added as two identical 80% patterns because games and factors often overlap.

Similar opponents

An additional sample is built around playing profiles rather than competition names alone: pace, perimeter defence, fouls and rebounding. Similarity must be defined transparently; otherwise, 'a similar opponent' becomes a way to fit the history to the desired conclusion.
