Reading fouls and free throws in live totals
Free throws stop the clock and offer relatively steady scoring opportunities, so two games at the same pace can have different totals. Already attempted free throws matter, but so do accumulated team fouls and the types of attack.
Free-throw rate and pressure at the rim
Free-throw rate measures how often a team reaches the line relative to its shot attempts. When a high live rate is supported by drives and contact, the projection should account for an upcoming foul bonus. An isolated technical foul does not establish that pattern.
Team-specific responses
Some teams reduce fouling when key players are in foul trouble; others change their defence and allow more shots. Historical responses to early foul trouble are assessed separately for home and away games.
What the model checks
- Team and personal fouls
- Free-throw rate and attack types
- The quarter's foul bonus
- Free-throw accuracy
