Fourth-quarter fouling: the hidden risk to UNDER

In the fourth quarter, playing pace and scoring pace can diverge. The final 90 seconds may produce more points than the previous four minutes if the deficit makes tactical fouling worthwhile.

The danger zone

Risk increases with a gap of roughly two or three possessions, available time-outs, the foul bonus and reliable free-throw shooters. An UNDER close to the line with little margin is not a strong selection in that situation, even when average pace is low.

When the late scoring risk falls

With a very large lead, teams often stop fouling and coaches bring on reserves. This is not universal: the model checks competition and team habits in similar finishes.
